Day # 15 — Winter Sounds

Photo by Ruvim Miksanskiy from Pexels

It was a bittersweet moment when I woke up yesterday morning to see our first inch of snow. Everything was covered in white, giving off this illusion of purity and not dormant grass and bare trees. I was happy to see snow after a long and hot summer, but it represented another first to me — first winter without my dad physically present.

A part of me is terrified that this winter will be difficult. Whenever I started to feel my grief, the first thing I did was go outside and sit on the edge of my patio to feel the heat of the sun. To me, grief feels ice cold. I think it’s because the last thing I felt walking out of my dad’s ICU room for the last time was how cold his hand got within minutes.

But I’m striving to keep up these daily writing prompts because it gives me a sense of purpose. I have to be here to write. I have to sit down and achieve something when all I want to do is lay on the couch and sleep all day.

So, thank you readers for being here for these prompts and my rambling thoughts. I appreciate it.

Describe ten sounds that you associate with winter.

  1. The furnace humming to life below the house after the thermostat clicks, calling for heat.
  2. The trickle of wood pellets in the pellet stove.
  3. The swish of heavy winter jackets when people walk by in the grocery aisle.
  4. The hushed and peaceful silence of a snowfall in the mountains.
  5. Snow crunching beneath my shoes.
  6. Christmas music playing everywhere.
  7. The crackle and sputter of a fire in a fireplace.
  8. The ice on my car windows cracking as the heater vents blow out warm air.
  9. Shovels against the sidewalk after a significant snowfall.
  10. The steady drip of melting icicles on the corner of the house.
